What was the Finland like that I was returning to? Lice and fleas were common. I tried to hide my cap under the desktop, but the teacher ordered me to take it to the coat rack. I was ashamed to be better dressed than the others were. I asked my mother to get me the kind of paper shoes with wooden soles that the other children had - and even the soldiers!
