Trompe-l´oeil

French has the word trompe-l´oeil that is well applicable to magic. It refers to deceptive seeing. A thing seemingly looks like something, but in reality everything is different. Some ancient philosophers reasoned that nothing visible is real. They spoke about conjurers. They had the suggestive skill to make things look what they wanted to. The concept of manipulation is well known in politics, where a matter is handily crafted into something else than it really is.
