I was feeling strange watching this neighbourhood. It was an important part of my life half a century ago. Those people carrying their bags did not know a thing about it. On the contrary, they might have asked - and some did - what my business was in their town. I always told them that I was studying the architecture of an old Russian town.
I recalled that fires alone had destroyed the town thirty times. No-one knows the scope of the destruction caused by wars.
