After comprehensive education, application for secondary
education may be made to an upper secondary school or
vocational institute. The upper secondary school is a
non-graded school (i.e. not divided into forms) providing
general education in which study lasts two to four years.
The purpose of general upper secondary education is to
give students an all-round education. The final examination
taken in general upper secondary education institutes is the
national matriculation examination. About 60% of Oulu pupils
start in a general upper secondary education institute after
completing basic education.
Upper secondary schools
The City of Oulu Department of Education runs eight
general
upper secondary schools for young people
and one general upper secondary school for
adults; classes at the adult institute are largely held in
the evenings.
The state-owned
Oulun normaalikoulun
lukio and privately-owned
Svenska Privatskolan i
Uleåborg (for Swedish-speaking students) and
Oulun
steinerkoulu are also located in Oulu.
You can also complete general upper secondary education
in English in Oulu by attending the International
Baccalaureate Diploma programme of
the Oulun Lyseo Upper
Secondary School.
The contact details of all Oulu general upper secondary
education institutes are listed on
the Department of Education’s site.
Applications
Online applications to all general upper secondary
education institutes in Finland are submitted at
www.haenyt.fi every March.
